Let us enlighten you to the joys of the Buschenschank

A Buschenschank, is a Gasthof or Vinyard which sells food and wine. These places are only to be found in the eastern and south eastern parts of Austria.

But, there is one major difference. 

Everything they sell has to be made on their own premises. They are not allowed to trade as a Buschenschank and buy in produce from the local butcher nor must
they sell hot food.

The 'Rules' were laid down in 1784 by Joseph II

So,  you will be offered a large wooden plate covered with home-cured ham, pork or home-made salami, some cheese, pickles and pâté and home-made fresh bread, all washed down with wine which came off the field next door !       
Food doesn't get better - even in France.

There are signposted 'wine roads' through the region where you can call at the vineyards along the route for a tasting.  It makes a great day out !
